Equine and Animal Assisted Activities for Special Needs Students

We are looking for a sound quarter horse type (stocky) not more than 15 hands and between 15 and 20 years old.  Our program horses carry children who may have a physical disability so they must have a calm and gentle temperament and no health issues.  If you are wanting to rehome a horse that matches our need, please contacct us at 615 453-2592.

Occasionally, Southern STARRS accepts the donation of a healthy and well-trained horse for our program.  If you are interested in donating your horse to our organization, please send us an email (or by USPS mail ) including a picture of your horse, information such as age, breed, height, date of last veterinary check, date of last ferrier service and copy of your most recent Coggins.  Any animal offered for donation will be checked by our veterinarian before acceptance.

We are unable to accept animals that do not meet the following criteria:

Cannot be over the age of 20
Cannot be over 15 hands
Preferably a stout build, such as a Halflinger or quarter horse
Must be healthy (no arthritis, joint inflammation, digestive problems, or history of serious illness)
Must be well-trained and have a calm nature
Cannot have bad habits such as kicking or biting

PLEASE NOTE: OUR PROGRAM HORSES CARRY MEDICALLY FRAGILE CHILDREN AND OUR ORGANIZATION IS SUPPORTED BY A LIMITED BUDGET. FOR THIS REASON, WE NEED HORSES THAT ARE ABOVE AVERAGE IN SOUNDNESS AND HAVE A HISTORY OF GOOD HEALTH SO THEY CAN DEPENDABLY CARRY RIDERS AND WILL NOT PLACE A FINANCIAL BURDEN ON THE PROGRAM.

IF YOU HAVE A HORSE THAT IS SICK, LAME, OLD, UNTRAINED, OR TOO YOUNG TO RIDE AND YOU NEED TO FIND A HOME BECAUSE YOU NO LONGER WANT OR CAN KEEP IT, PLEASE CONTACT A LOCAL HORSE RESCUE AGENCY.
