Southern STARRS Program Overview
Southern STARRS Program Overview
At Southern STARRS, our programs foster physical strength, emotional growth, and confidence
through meaningful connections between riders and horses. Each experience is designed to
support individuals of all ages and abilities in a safe, encouraging environment.
Therapeutic Riding
Our instructors and trained volunteers guide riders through individualized sessions that
promote balance, coordination, and self-esteem. Lessons are tailored to each participant’s
unique needs, combining equine-assisted activities with compassionate support.
Community Outreach
Southern STARRS partners with local schools, veteran organizations, and community groups
to expand access to therapeutic riding and equine education. Together, we build awareness,
inclusion, and opportunities for growth across Middle Tennessee.
Volunteer Program
Volunteers are the heart of Southern STARRS. From assisting in classes and caring for
horses to helping with events and facility upkeep, they make every ride possible. Training
is provided—no prior horse experience required, just a willingness to help.
Special Events
Throughout the year, we host showcases, fundraisers, and themed rides that celebrate our
riders’ achievements and bring the community together. These events highlight teamwork,
compassion, and the healing presence of horses.

Southern STARRS - Our Founders
Our Founders
Southern STARRS was founded by Terry and Saranne Winfield and officially opened its doors in May 2000.
Saranne, a lifelong horse enthusiast and owner, brings extensive experience in English and five-gaited show disciplines, along with a deep appreciation for the many ways horses enrich lives. While in college, she developed a passion for programs that harness the healing power of the human–animal bond to support individuals with physical, mental, and emotional challenges.
Through their involvement with the Tennessee Walking Horse Association and the Walking Horses Overcoming Obstacles (WHOO) Foundation, the Winfields trained and mentored with registered facilities of the North American Handicapped Riders Association (now PATH International). Their dedication and vision led to the creation of Southern STARRS.
To bring this mission to life, Terry and Saranne built a 14-stall barn on their property and generously donated
